Belait
District
Oil was first discovered the Belait district in 1929, landmarks like the Billionth Barrel Monument, Seria Energy Lab and the nodding donkeys used to extract oil mark the status of Belait as the country’s centre of the oil and gas industry.
Belait is the waterfall district of Brunei, with a recorded 40 waterfalls dotted throughout the forest reserves. Chasing waterfalls is a great workout–trekking through the jungle, climbing over rocks and wading through streams–and with a local indigenous guide who knows the jungle inside out, it will be a breeze. Indigenous heritage have endured the test of time and in Belait, rainforest and tribal experiences go hand in hand. You can visit a longhouse, the actual homes of the native community to experience their culture and crafts, and hear their stories of the land. The Belait district celebrates both traditional heritage and modern industry.
